Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Fragments: New Moments featuring new paintings and drawings by Judith Jacobson. Jacobson’s work speaks of change, metamorphosis, and transcendence – encouraging a dialogue about the inevitable, gradual evolution that we experience as we grow older. Ultimately, she seeks to create an environment that will embrace more dignified values and standards of beauty, transcending the superficial.

Jacobson starts with photographs of herself or people close to her, and through multiple photocopying and manipulation, breaks down the overall image while enhancing the constituent parts. As she experiences and chooses each wrinkle, crack and crevice, an obscured facial fragment emerges slowly. This fragment is then methodically painted with a palette of sand and oil to influence both hue and texture. It is the process that defines this work; abstract clusters of entangled lines describe intimate glimpses of delicate mortal filigree.

Judith Jacobson received an MFA degree in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts. Select exhibition venues include Projects Gallery, Abington Art Center, The State Museum of Pennsylvania and The Woodmere Art Museum. Among her numerous awards and honors, she received The Leeway Foundation Edna Andrade Award for Painting in 2000.

Fragments: New Moments is on view from April 18 - May 30, 2008 and is free and open to the public. The opening reception is Friday, April 18 from 5-9pm. The artist will be available for questions about her work at the gallery Sunday, May 4 from 1-4pm with a Gallery Talk at 2pm.
